My father-in-law had a heart attack on the 5th of November. We were on the way to my hub's kampung in Malaysia and my father-in-law was driving. Suddenly, at about 1.30pm, he had a heart attack but he managed to stop the car. It wasn't as dramatic as it usually is on TV. None of us knew what was going on. Luckily, my hub knows how to drive so he drove to his grandmother's place.

When we reached there, he did not look good at all. He couldn't move and basically, just couldn't do anything but lay there in the living room. We knew we had to get him to the hospital immediately but, nobody knew the number to call the ambulance! Can you believe it?! I simply could NOT believe that NOBODY knew the number. Even the doctor from a nearby clinic who came to the house didn't know! A doctor!

Eventually, we found out the number and the ambulance came at about 6pm. The paramedics, I assumed, walked slowly into the house and asked some of us to help carry my father-in-law onto the stretcher. By this time, I was already shaking my head at the incompetence of the healthcare officers there.

We immediately arranged for a Singapore ambulance to wait for us at the Immigration Checkpoint. When we arrived in Singapore, he was RUSHED to NUH and had a surgery as they found out that 2 of the arteries leading to his heart was blocked. I assumed that it was because of smoking.

After 4 days in the Intensive Care Unit, he passed away quietly on the 9th of November. May he rest in peace.

I am both disgusted and disappointed at the healthcare services in Malaysia. I can only hope that what happened to my family is not a reflection of the whole country's general healthcare service. If it is, I am deeply sorry for the people living there.
